The SANDVIK COROMANT 5915142 is a VNMG-style solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This insert carries the manufacturer grade 1115 with a dual-layer TiAlN and AlCr2O3 coating applied via PVD process, delivering thermal resistance and edge durability on difficult-to-machine materials. The SM chip breaker geometry is engineered for controlled chip formation. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 1/32-inch corner radius, and a 35-degree included diamond shape, this insert is suited for finishing and semi-finishing passes where edge geometry and surface finish consistency are critical. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in precision job shop or production environments are the typical installers.
This insert is built for primary use on stainless steel workpieces and is rated for secondary use on superalloys and titanium. It fits within the SANDVIK COROMANT T-Max P series tooling system. Typical applications include external and internal turning, facing, and profiling on CNC lathes processing aerospace, medical, and industrial components where work-hardening and heat generation at the cutting edge are primary concerns. The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with both right-hand and left-hand toolholders configured for VNMG insert pockets. ISO designation for this insert is VNMG 16 04 08-SM 1115.
Designed for use with SANDVIK COROMANT T-Max P series toolholders and any VNMG 332 insert pocket toolholder accepting clamp and pin retention. ISO code VNMG 16 04 08-SM 1115 confirms fitment with standard VNMG-style boring bars and external turning toolholders of matching geometry.
Insert installation and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a full stop, spindle off, and locked-out state per applicable machine guarding and lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate SANDVIK COROMANT T-Max P series wrench or torx key to secure the clamp to the manufacturer-specified procedure for the toolholder in use. Inspect the insert pocket seat and shim for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Do not exceed the cutting parameter ranges specified in the T-Max P series application guide for the workpiece material being machined.
