The SANDVIK COROMANT 5915140 is a solid carbide, uncoated turning insert designed for precision external and internal turning operations on difficult-to-machine materials. Manufactured to ISO designation VNMG160404SMH13A, this insert features a 35-degree diamond shape (V), a neutral hand orientation, and the SM chip breaker geometry — a combination engineered for controlled chip formation in demanding cutting environments. The H13A uncoated carbide grade delivers thermal stability and edge toughness. With an inscribed circle of 0.375 inches and a corner radius of 0.0157 inches (1/64 inch), it is suited for finishing and semi-finishing passes where tight tolerances are required. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production or job-shop environments are the primary users.
This insert is part of the SANDVIK COROMANT T-Max P series, optimized for turning stainless steel (ISO material code M) as the primary workpiece material. Secondary applications include superalloys and titanium (ISO material code S), where edge integrity and resistance to built-up edge are critical. The SM chip breaker geometry supports controlled chip evacuation at moderate depths of cut, making it applicable to both horizontal and slant-bed CNC lathes in light production and precision machining scenarios. Maximum depth of cut is 0.0945 inches (2.40 mm).
Designed for use in SANDVIK COROMANT T-Max P series toolholders that accept VNMG-style inserts with a 0.15-inch hole diameter. Suitable for CNC turning centers and manual lathes configured for clamp-and-pin insert retention.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the turret indexed to a safe position before seating or replacing inserts. Verify that the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before installing; debris under the insert will cause premature edge failure. Torque clamping screws per the toolholder manufacturer's specification — do not over-tighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and will crack under excessive clamp force.
