The SANDVIK COROMANT 5915088 is a solid carbide turning insert carrying the ISO designation SNMG 12 04 08-SM 1125. It belongs to the T-Max P series and is designed for single-point turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert features a TiAlN and AlCr2O3 dual-layer PVD coating and the SM chip breaker geometry, optimizing it for cutting stainless steel as the primary workpiece material. With 8 available cutting edges on a neutral-hand, 90-degree square body, this insert delivers a cost-effective edge count per insert for high-production environments. It is installed and indexed by licensed machinists or CNC operators.
This insert is engineered primarily for stainless steel machining and is rated as a secondary-material insert for superalloys and titanium. The SM chip breaker geometry is suited to finishing and medium turning passes where controlled chip formation is critical. Typical applications include shaft turning, facing, and contour work on stainless and difficult-to-machine alloy components in aerospace, oil and gas, and precision manufacturing. The 1125 grade with PVD coating maintains edge integrity at elevated temperatures common in these materials.
Designed for use in negative-rake SNMG-style toolholders accepting a 432 insert size with clamp and pin holding. Compatible toolholders must accommodate a 0.5000-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch insert thickness, and 0.2030-inch hole diameter. Consult SANDVIK COROMANT T-Max P toolholder specifications to confirm seat and clamp compatibility before ordering.
Insert indexing and replacement must be performed with the machine powered down and the spindle fully stopped. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the clamp or pin — do not overtighten or substitute fasteners. Ensure the insert seat and pocket are clean and free of chips before seating the new edge. Follow shop safety procedures and applicable OSHA machine guarding standards when servicing any CNC turning center.
