The SANDVIK COROMANT 5909115 is a WNMG433SMR 1115-grade solid carbide turning insert from the T-Max P series, designed for precision external turning operations on CNC lathes. It carries a dual-layer PVD coating of TiAlN and AlCr2O3 for wear resistance and thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds. The insert features a neutral hand orientation, an 80-degree trigon shape, a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, and a 3/64 inch (0.0472 inch) corner radius. With 6 usable cutting edges and an SMR chip breaker geometry, it is suited to controlled chip formation in interrupted and continuous cuts. Licensed machinists and CNC lathe operators working in job shops, aerospace, and precision manufacturing facilities use this insert for demanding turning applications.
This insert is optimized for primary use on stainless steel (ISO material code M) and is also rated for secondary workpiece materials including superalloys and titanium (ISO material code S). The SMR chip breaker geometry supports finishing to light roughing passes on these difficult-to-machine materials. Typical applications include shaft turning, bore facing, and contour turning on CNC turning centers and manual lathes where close tolerances and surface finish are critical. The T-Max P series is a well-established indexable insert platform used in production turning environments across aerospace, energy, and medical machining sectors.
Designed as an OEM replacement and standard production insert for WNMG-style toolholders accepting a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, 3/16 inch thick trigon insert with a 0.2032 inch hole diameter. ISO code WNMG080412SMR1115. Compatible with clamp and pin style insert seats in the T-Max P toolholder platform.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Ensure the lathe or turning center is fully powered down and spindle is locked before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque driver for the clamping screw — refer to the toolholder manufacturer torque specification for the seat type. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the new insert to avoid insert rocking or premature edge failure.
