The SANDVIK COROMANT 5909083 is a solid carbide, uncoated turning insert in the T-Max P series, designed for precision finish turning on CNC lathes and turning centers. Identified by ANSI code VNGG331 and ISO code VNGG160404, this insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a negative side clearance and an SGF chip breaker geometry optimized for finishing operations. The H13A uncoated carbide grade delivers high wear resistance across a range of workpiece materials. With four usable cutting edges per insert, it offers an efficient cost-per-edge ratio for production environments. The insert measures 16.61 mm in length with a 0.375-inch inscribed circle and a 0.0157-inch corner radius.
This insert is engineered for finishing passes on stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum and other non-ferrous materials, and superalloys including titanium. The SGF chip breaker geometry is suited to light to moderate depth-of-cut applications with a maximum depth of cut of 2.40 mm (0.0945 inches). It is typically installed by CNC machinists and tooling specialists in production turning operations where tight tolerances and surface finish are priorities. The insert is held using a clamp-and-pin method and is compatible with standard VNGG-style toolholders.
Designed for use in VNGG-style toolholders that accept ANSI size code 331 or ISO size code 160404 inserts with clamp-and-pin holding. Primary workpiece material codes P, K, N, and S indicate suitability for stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum and non-ferrous materials, and special superalloys. Secondary materials include superalloys and titanium.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and locked out before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified for the toolholder to secure the insert — do not overtighten by hand alone. Inspect the insert pocket and locating pin for wear or debris before seating a new insert to ensure accurate positioning and surface finish results.
