The SANDVIK COROMANT 5908972 is a CNMG432-SMR 1115 grade solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. This insert features a TiAlN and AlCr2O3 PVD coating for enhanced wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. The 80-degree diamond shape (C-style) provides a strong, versatile cutting geometry suited to a wide range of turning applications. With a 1/2-inch inscribed circle, a 1/32-inch corner radius, and a neutral hand orientation, it fits standard CNMG toolholders secured by clamp and pin holding methods. This insert is part of the Sandvik T-Max P series and is primarily intended for use by CNC machinists and toolroom professionals.
This insert is engineered primarily for machining stainless steel, with secondary suitability for superalloys and titanium. These are demanding workpiece materials that require a tough, thermally stable coating and a controlled chip breaker geometry. The SMR chip breaker geometry is designed to manage chip flow and reduce cutting forces in these difficult-to-machine materials. It is well suited to finishing and semi-finishing passes on components in aerospace, medical, and industrial manufacturing environments where surface integrity and dimensional accuracy are critical.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard indexable insert for CNMG-style toolholders accepting a 432 insert size with clamp and pin holding. ISO equivalent designation is CNMG120408-SMR 1115.
This insert is installed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians in CNMG-compatible toolholders. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench for the clamping screw as specified by the toolholder manufacturer. Inspect the toolholder seat and shim for damage or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper support and accurate tool nose position.
