The SANDVIK COROMANT 5891431 is a VNMG-style solid carbide turning insert in the T-Max P series, designed for precision external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a dual-layer PVD coating of TiAlN and AlCr2O3, which provides thermal resistance and wear protection at elevated cutting temperatures. The insert features a 35-degree diamond shape, a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 1/64-inch corner radius, and a neutral hand orientation. The SF chip breaker geometry targets demanding workpiece materials where chip control and edge stability are critical. Machining professionals and CNC setup technicians install this insert in compatible toolholders using clamp and pin holding methods.
This insert is engineered primarily for stainless steel (ISO material code M) and is also rated for superalloys and titanium (ISO material code S). These are among the most thermally and mechanically demanding materials in precision machining, making the PVD-coated carbide substrate and SF chip breaker geometry particularly well matched. Typical applications include turning shafts, flanges, fittings, and aerospace or medical components where surface finish and dimensional tolerance are tightly controlled. It is sold individually but carries a minimum order quantity of 10 units.
Designed for use in VNMG-compatible turning toolholders that accept a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert with clamp and pin retention. ISO designation VNMG 16 04 04-SF 1115. Confirm toolholder pocket style and insert holding method before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully in the toolholder pocket and secure the clamp and pin to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque before starting a cut. Inspect the cutting edge and coating condition at each insert index; a damaged or worn edge should be indexed or replaced rather than returned to service.
