The SANDVIK COROMANT 5891383 is a CNMG431-SF 1125 series turning insert designed for demanding metal-cutting applications on CNC lathes and turning centers. This solid carbide insert features a TiAlN and AlCr2O3 PVD coating applied over a grade 1125 substrate, giving it strong resistance to heat and wear when cutting difficult materials. The diamond-shaped 80-degree insert geometry, neutral hand orientation, and SF chip breaker geometry work together to control chip flow and reduce cutting forces. It is installed and changed out by machinists and CNC turning specialists in job shops and production environments.
This insert is optimized for turning stainless steel as its primary workpiece material, with secondary suitability for superalloys and titanium. These are materials that demand sharp edges, stable coatings, and controlled chip evacuation to avoid built-up edge and premature wear. The T-Max P series insert is suited for medium to finishing passes where surface finish and tool life consistency are priorities. The SF chip breaker designation targets free-cutting geometries on these tough, work-hardening alloys.
Designed for use in standard CNMG-style turning toolholders that accept clamp and pin insert retention. Compatible with T-Max P series tooling systems. Verify toolholder pocket dimensions and clamping method before installation. ISO designation CNMG 12 04 04-SF 1125 can be used to confirm fitment with holder manufacturer specifications.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed with the machine fully powered down and the spindle locked. Ensure the toolholder pocket and seating surface are clean and free of chips or debris before placing the insert. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamping hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not overtighten the clamp screw. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for wear each time an edge is indexed.
