The SANDVIK COROMANT 5888556 is a solid carbide milling insert in the R390 series, designed for shoulder milling and face milling operations on steel and stainless steel workpieces. Coated with TiAlN via a PVD process, the insert carries manufacturer grade 1040 and material grade M30, making it suited for demanding cutting conditions where heat resistance and edge stability are priorities. The parallelogram insert shape features a positive rake angle of 22 degrees with a corner-rounded cutting edge style. Two cutting edges are available per insert. The inscribed circle measures 0.3780 inches (9.60 mm) and the corner radius is 0.2500 inches (6.35 mm). This insert is installed by machinists and CNC tooling technicians in production and job-shop environments.
The 5888556 is built for use in R390 series cutter bodies running steel and stainless steel materials, corresponding to ISO material codes P and M. Typical applications include shoulder milling, pocket milling, and ramping cuts in ferrous materials at moderate to high cutting speeds. The MM chip breaker geometry supports consistent chip control across a range of feed rates. Maximum depth of cut reaches 0.5906 inches (15.00 mm). The insert is secured via a screw-clamping method, compatible with standard R390 cutter body configurations.
Designed for use with R390 series cutter bodies. ANSI and ISO code R390-17 04 64E-MM 1040 identifies the insert for cross-referencing with compatible tooling. Insert size code 170464 applies. Consult cutter body documentation to confirm pocket geometry and screw specification before ordering.
Installation is performed by qualified tooling technicians or machinists. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing inserts. Use the correct Torx or hex key as specified by the cutter body manufacturer for the clamping screw — do not over-drive the screw. Inspect the insert pocket for debris or burrs before seating the insert to ensure full, flat contact and accurate runout.
