Product Description

The SANDVIK COROMANT 5888544 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for use in R390 series shoulder milling cutters. Coated with TiAlN via a PVD process, this parallelogram-shaped insert carries a manufacturer grade of 1040 and a material grade of M30. It features a positive rake angle of 22 degrees, a corner radius of 0.40 mm (0.0157 inches), and two cutting edges per insert. The insert is held in place by a screw-type clamping method and is suited for single-sided use. It is a right-hand insert with a rounded corner cutting edge style and an included angle of 90 degrees. Licensed machinists and CNC toolroom technicians are the primary installers.

This insert is engineered for machining steel and stainless steel, covering ISO material application codes P and M. It fits the R390 shoulder milling cutter series and is identified by ANSI and ISO code R390-17 04 04E-MM 1040. It is applicable in both roughing and finishing passes where consistent edge geometry and wear resistance are required. The MM chip breaker geometry supports effective chip control during milling operations in these material groups. Typical use is in production machining environments running CNC vertical or horizontal milling centers.

Key Features

  • Solid carbide substrate with TiAlN PVD coating for wear resistance in steel and stainless steel applications
  • Grade 1040 with M30 material grade classification for broad steel and stainless steel compatibility
  • Positive rake angle of 22 degrees reduces cutting forces and heat generation
  • Corner radius of 0.40 mm provides controlled edge geometry for surface finish and tool life
  • MM chip breaker design supports effective chip evacuation during shoulder milling
  • Two cutting edges per insert for extended service value before replacement

Compatibility

Designed for use with the R390 cutter series. ANSI and ISO designation R390-17 04 04E-MM 1040. Insert size code 170404. Compatible cutter series: R390.

Installation Notes

Insert installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC toolroom technician with the machine fully powered down and spindle locked before any insert change. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key as specified by the cutter body manufacturer for the screw-clamp seat. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for damage or debris before seating the new insert. Follow the cutter body manufacturer documentation for proper torque procedure and seat contact verification.
