The SANDVIK COROMANT 5888492 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for use in high-performance face and shoulder milling operations. Part of the 490 series, this square-shaped insert carries manufacturer grade 1040 with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating for elevated wear resistance and thermal stability. It features four cutting edges with a positive rake angle of 26 degrees and a corner radius of 0.80 mm (0.0315 inches), making it well suited for demanding metal removal applications in steel and stainless steel workpieces. The insert is held in the cutter body via a screw-clamping method and is single-sided with a right-hand cutting orientation.
This insert is intended for use in milling applications targeting steel (ISO material code P) and stainless steel (ISO material code M), covering the M30 material grade range. It fits within the 490 cutter series and is appropriate for both roughing and finishing passes where corner rounding and chip control are priorities. The MM chip breaker geometry supports efficient chip evacuation across a range of cut depths up to 10.00 mm (0.3937 inches). It is commonly installed by machinists and tooling technicians in CNC milling environments across metalworking, fabrication, and production machining settings.
Designed for use with 490 series milling cutter bodies. ANSI and ISO code: 490R-140408E-MM 1040. Insert size code: 140408. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine powered down and in a locked-out state before handling inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified for the 490 series cutter body when seating and torquing the clamping screw. Inspect the insert pocket and screw threads for damage or debris before seating a new insert. Follow the cutter body manufacturer guidelines for correct insert orientation and seating depth.
