The SANDVIK COROMANT 5854743 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for use in 490-series face and shoulder milling cutters. It carries a manufacturer grade of 3040 with a CVD-applied dual coating of TiCN and Al2O3, providing wear resistance and thermal stability across a range of cutting conditions. The insert is square in shape with a 90-degree included angle, a positive rake angle of 23 degrees, and a corner radius of 0.80 mm (0.0315 inches). With four cutting edges and a maximum depth of cut of 10.00 mm (0.3937 inches), this insert delivers consistent performance in production milling environments. Installation is handled by screw-clamping. Sold individually with a minimum order quantity of 10.
This insert is suited for milling steel, cast iron, and hard materials, corresponding to ISO material groups P, K, and H. Typical applications include face milling, shoulder milling, and ramping operations in both production shops and job-shop environments. The PM chip breaker geometry supports stable chip control across these workpiece categories. The right-hand configuration and single-sided design are standard for 490-series tooling setups found in CNC machining centers used in both automotive and general metalworking applications.
Compatible with Sandvik Coromant 490-series milling cutter bodies. ANSI and ISO code: 490R-140408M-PM 3040. Insert size code 140408. Designed for right-hand cutting applications.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician using the appropriate Torx or hex key for the clamping screw specified by the cutter body manufacturer. Always index or replace inserts with the spindle fully stopped and machine power isolated. Inspect the cutter pocket seating surface for chips or debris before seating the insert, as contamination will affect runout and edge life. Follow the cutter body manufacturer torque guidance for the clamping screw — do not overtighten.
