The SANDVIK COROMANT 5844009 is an indexable square-shoulder face mill designed for precision milling operations in metalworking and machining environments. Part of the CoroMill 490 series, this cutter features a 2.5-inch maximum cutting diameter and accepts up to five 490R-1404 style inserts secured by clamp and screw. The 90-degree lead angle enables true square-shoulder cuts, making it well-suited for step milling, face milling, and profile work. Through-coolant capability supports chip evacuation and insert longevity during extended cuts. The toolholder is constructed of steel and measures 1.969 inches in overall height. Right-hand cutting direction is standard.
This face mill is used in CNC machining centers and manual mills where square-shoulder profiling and face milling are required. The 1-inch arbor hole diameter suits a range of spindle and arbor setups common in job shop and production environments. It is typically installed by machinists and tooling specialists working in aerospace, automotive, die-and-mold, and general metalworking applications. The CoroMill 490 platform is recognized for its 90-degree approach angle geometry, which minimizes radial cutting forces and supports long overhangs.
Designed for use with 490R-1404 compatible inserts as part of the CoroMill 490 series tooling system. Insert style code is A490. Verify arbor and spindle interface dimensions before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine powered off and locked out per applicable safety procedures. Ensure the arbor and spindle interface are clean and free of debris before mounting. Insert seating and clamping torque should follow the toolholder manufacturer guidelines for the A490 cutter style. Confirm through-coolant passages are clear and coolant pressure is within the machine specification before running at full feed rate.
