The SANDVIK COROMANT 5756646 is a WNMG431-QM 1105 grade solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal cutting in CNC lathe and turning center applications. Coated with TiAlN via a PVD process, this insert delivers wear resistance and thermal stability across a range of workpiece materials. The neutral hand orientation and 80-degree trigon shape provide six usable cutting edges per insert, reducing per-edge tooling cost. With an inscribed circle of 0.5 inches and a corner radius of 0.0156 inches (1/64 inch), it is suited for medium-duty finishing and semi-finishing passes on steel and stainless steel components.
This insert is used in external turning, facing, and profiling operations on CNC lathes and multi-axis turning centers. Primary workpiece material is steel, with secondary suitability for stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. The QM chip breaker geometry is optimized for controlled chip evacuation in these materials, making it a practical choice for production machining environments where chip management and surface finish consistency are priorities. Machinists and tooling specialists handling high-volume steel turning will find the 1105 grade well matched to moderate cutting speeds and feed rates.
This insert is part of the SANDVIK COROMANT T-Max P series and carries ISO code WNMG 08 04 04-QM 1105. It is designed for use in WNMG-style toolholders accepting a 0.5-inch inscribed circle trigon insert with a clamp or pin holding method.
Insert indexing and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine powered down and the spindle locked. Ensure the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Use the appropriate torque tool per the toolholder manufacturer specifications when securing the clamping screw. Inspect the cutting edge and chip breaker condition at regular intervals to maintain dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
