The SANDVIK COROMANT 5756178 is a solid carbide indexable drill insert designed for use in indexable insert drills in metal-cutting operations. Manufactured to the WCMX insert style with a trigon (W) shape and a 7-degree relief angle, this insert is coated via MTCVD process with TiCN and Al2O3 layers, providing wear resistance and thermal stability in demanding drilling applications. It carries Sandvik Coromant grade designation 3040. The inscribed circle measures 0.3125 inches (5/16 inches), thickness is 0.125 inches (1/8 inches), and the corner radius is 0.80 mm (0.0315 inches). The 53-series chipbreaker geometry is engineered to control chip formation in a variety of workpiece materials. This insert is installed and replaced by machinists and tool-room professionals in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for indexable insert drilling operations in ferrous and non-ferrous materials in both manual and CNC machine tool setups. The right-hand cutting direction makes it compatible with standard right-hand spindle configurations. The WCMX insert style places it in the center or peripheral position of compatible drill bodies, depending on the drill design. The insert size designation is 5, with a length and width of 0.3125 inches and a hole diameter of 0.1260 inches (3.20 mm) for secure clamping. Applications typically include through-hole and blind-hole drilling in production machining environments.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement indexable drill insert for compatible Sandvik Coromant and equivalent indexable insert drill bodies accepting WCMX-style inserts with a 5/16-inch inscribed circle and 1/8-inch thickness.
Indexable drill inserts are seated and torqued by machinists using the appropriate Torx or hex key specified by the drill body manufacturer. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket seat for chips, debris, or wear before seating a new insert, as a contaminated pocket will affect runout and tool life. Do not use damaged or out-of-spec inserts in high-speed applications.
