The SANDVIK COROMANT 5755398 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VBGT331-UM 1115 geometry, designed for precision external turning operations on CNC lathes. It features a 35-degree diamond insert shape (V) with a neutral hand orientation and a 1/64-inch corner radius, making it well suited for finishing and semi-finishing passes. The dual-layer TiAlN and AlCr2O3 PVD coating in the 1115 grade delivers heat resistance and edge retention when machining difficult-to-cut materials. The UM chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip evacuation at moderate feed rates and depths of cut. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert as part of routine tooling changes in production turning cells.
This insert is engineered primarily for stainless steel (ISO material group M) and is also rated for superalloys and titanium (ISO material group S). It fits into the CoroTurn 107 series toolholder system, which uses a screw-clamping holding method compatible with standard boring bars and external turning holders that accept VBGT-style inserts. Typical applications include shaft turning, shoulder profiling, and contour turning in aerospace, medical, and general precision machining environments where surface finish and tool life consistency are critical.
Designed for use with CoroTurn 107 series toolholders that accept VBGT-style inserts with a screw-clamping holding method. Primary workpiece material compatibility is stainless steel (ISO group M); secondary compatibility covers superalloys and titanium (ISO group S).
Insert changes should be performed with the machine powered down and spindle locked. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide substrate. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before installing a fresh insert. Always verify insert orientation and hand designation match the toolholder before resuming cutting operations.
