The SANDVIK COROMANT 5748688 is a solid carbide turning insert in the SCMT geometry, designed for external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the manufacturer grade 1125 with a dual-layer TiAlN and AlCr2O3 coating applied by a PVD process, delivering wear resistance and thermal stability in demanding cuts. The insert measures 3/8 inches in length with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 5/32-inch thickness, and a 1/64-inch corner radius. Four usable cutting edges per insert are available through a neutral hand orientation and screw-type clamping. This is part of the CoroTurn 107 series, suited for light to medium finishing and semi-finishing passes.
This insert is primarily rated for steel workpieces and secondarily suited for stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium, covering ISO material codes P, M, and S. This insert is installed by a machinist or CNC setup technician using the appropriate Torx or hex key for the clamping screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer. Ensure the machine spindle is stopped and the turret is in a safe indexed position before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully and evenly in the pocket before tightening the clamping screw; an improperly seated insert can fracture under cutting load. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or damage each time an insert is rotated or replaced.
