The SANDVIK COROMANT 5746855 is a solid carbide milling insert in grade 3040, designed for use in R390 series shoulder milling cutters. The insert carries a CVD-applied dual-layer coating of TiCN and Al2O3, which provides thermal and abrasion resistance during interrupted and continuous cuts. It features a parallelogram shape with a positive rake angle of 22 degrees, a corner radius of 0.0315 inches (0.80 mm), and two cutting edges. The insert is held in place by a screw and is sized to the 170408 insert size code. Licensed machinists and CNC tooling technicians install this insert in production and job-shop environments where consistent edge geometry and coating durability are required.
This insert is suited for shoulder milling applications on steel, cast iron, and hard materials, corresponding to material grade designations P20, K30, and H25. The KL chip breaker geometry supports positive cutting action in these material groups. The right-hand configuration positions it for standard R390 cutter bodies. Typical applications include face milling and ramping operations on machining centers where depth-of-cut requirements reach up to 0.6299 inches (16.00 mm). The single-sided design with a 90-degree included angle suits square-shoulder profiling and pocket milling work.
Designed for use in SANDVIK COROMANT R390 series cutter bodies. ANSI and ISO code R390-17 04 08M-KL 3040 identifies the exact cutter series and pocket geometry required. Confirm cutter body pocket specifications match insert size code 170408 before installation.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing inserts. Use the manufacturer-specified torx or hex key to drive the clamping screw; do not use impact tools on insert screws. Inspect the cutter body pocket for debris or wear before seating the insert to ensure proper seating and edge registration.
