The SANDVIK COROMANT 5746138 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for high-performance indexable milling operations. It carries manufacturer grade 2030 and features a dual-layer TiAlN and TiN PVD coating for heat and wear resistance. The insert is parallelogram-shaped with a 90-degree included angle, a positive 22-degree rake angle, and a corner-rounded cutting edge style. With 2 cutting edges and a right-hand orientation, it suits demanding metal removal applications in the R390 cutter series. A licensed machinist or tooling technician familiar with indexable insert tooling handles installation and indexing on the shop floor or in production environments.
This insert is intended for milling steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium — material grades P30, M25, and S20. The R390 series platform is widely used in shoulder milling and face milling applications across both job-shop and production settings. The MM chip breaker geometry supports reliable chip control across the covered material range. Maximum depth of cut reaches 15.70 mm (0.6181 inches), making it suitable for moderate-to-aggressive radial engagement passes in roughing and semi-finishing operations.
Designed for use in the SANDVIK COROMANT R390 cutter series. ANSI and ISO code: R390-17 04 16E-MM 2030. Insert size code 170416. Cutter series compatibility confirmed for R390 platform toolholders accepting this insert geometry.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Disengage the machine spindle and confirm zero-energy state before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key to the toolholder manufacturer's specified seating torque — consult the R390 toolholder documentation for the correct fastener specification. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or damage before seating the new insert.
