The SANDVIK COROMANT 5746072 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for use in R390 series face and shoulder milling cutters. Carrying the manufacturer grade 2040 with a CVD-applied multilayer TiCrN, Al2O3, and TiN coating, this insert is built to handle demanding cutting operations on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. The parallelogram insert shape features a positive rake angle of 5 degrees, a corner-rounded cutting edge style, and an ML chip breaker geometry. With 2 cutting edges per insert and a maximum depth of cut of 16.00 mm, it delivers consistent performance in high-productivity milling applications. Installation is by screw-holding method. It is a single-sided insert intended for right-hand cutting.
This insert is suited for industrial milling operations where tool life and chip control across multiple workpiece material groups are priorities. It targets P-class steels, M-class stainless steels, and S-class superalloys and titanium alloys, corresponding to material grades P45, M40, and S30. Typical use cases include shoulder milling and face milling on machining centers and CNC milling platforms in production environments. The ML chip breaker geometry is optimized for light to medium cutting passes, making this insert a practical choice for finishing and semi-finishing on difficult-to-machine materials.
Compatible with R390 series and M-40 series milling cutter bodies. ANSI and ISO code R390-18 06 16H-ML 2040. Insert size code 180616. Fits toolholders designed for the R390-18 insert seat specification.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the correct torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer when tightening the clamping screw — follow the toolholder OEM torque guidance, not a generic value. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and runout.
