The SANDVIK COROMANT 5745931 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for use in R390 series face and shoulder milling cutters. Manufactured to ANSI and ISO code R390-18 06 12M-KM 1020, this single-sided, right-hand insert features a parallelogram shape with a positive 5-degree rake angle and a KM chip breaker geometry. The 1020 grade substrate is finished with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, targeting wear resistance and thermal stability in cast iron applications. The insert measures 11.00 mm in inscribed circle diameter, 6.33 mm thick, with a 1.20 mm corner radius. Installation is via screw-clamp holding method.
This insert is intended for milling cast iron workpieces in industrial and production machining environments. It carries a K05 material grade designation and a primary workpiece material code of K, placing it squarely in the cast iron cutting category. The KM chip breaker promotes controlled chip evacuation at moderate to high feed rates. The maximum depth of cut is 16.00 mm, making it suitable for both light finishing and semi-roughing passes in cast iron components. Machinists and toolroom technicians working with M-40 and R390 series tool bodies will find this insert a direct fit for standard insert pockets in those cutter families.

Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the machine in a fully locked-out, de-energized state per applicable lockout/tagout procedures. Use the correct torx or hex key specified by the cutter body manufacturer to seat the clamping screw - do not overtighten, as this can crack the carbide insert. Inspect the insert pocket seating surface for chips or debris before installation. Replace inserts at the first sign of chipping, built-up edge, or surface finish degradation to avoid workpiece damage or cutter body wear.
