The SANDVIK COROMANT 5740560 is a round carbide turning insert designed for metal cutting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Designated RCMT43-SM 1125 and belonging to the CoroTurn 107 series, this insert features a 0.5 inch inscribed circle (IC), a 3/16 inch thickness, and a 7-degree relief angle. The 1125 grade substrate is coated with TiAlN and AlCr2O3 via a PVD process, providing heat and wear resistance suited to demanding cutting environments. The RCMT insert shape provides a round cutting edge with four usable cutting edges per insert, maximizing tool life per piece. It is installed by licensed machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is engineered primarily for turning stainless steel, with secondary application suitability for superalloys and titanium. These materials are common in aerospace, medical device, oil and gas, and precision industrial machining. The SM chip breaker geometry is intended for moderate depths of cut and feed rates typical in finishing and semi-finishing passes on difficult-to-machine alloys. The screw-clamping holding method (RCMT style) ensures consistent seating and repeatability during insert indexing on compatible toolholders.
Designed for use in the Sandvik Coromant CoroTurn 107 toolholder system. Compatible toolholders accept RCMT-style screw-clamp inserts with a 0.5 inch inscribed circle. Consult the CoroTurn 107 toolholder catalog to confirm bore diameter and clamping screw compatibility before installation.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by qualified machinists with the machine spindle locked and all power isolated per shop lockout/tagout procedures. Use the correct Torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer when tightening the clamping screw — do not over-torque, as carbide inserts are brittle and can fracture under excessive clamping load. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating a new insert to ensure proper contact and accurate tool-nose positioning. Dispose of worn inserts per applicable shop waste and sharps handling protocols.
