The SANDVIK COROMANT 5740171 is an indexable square-shoulder end mill built on the CoroMill 390 platform, designed for high-precision shoulder milling, face milling, and ramping operations on machining centers. The body is constructed from steel and accepts four R390-11 series screw-clamped inserts, producing a true 90-degree lead angle at the cutting edge. Cutting diameter is 1.5 inches, maximum depth of cut is 10.01 mm (0.394 inches), and the tool reaches a maximum spindle speed of 27,800 RPM. Through-coolant capability directs fluid directly to the cutting zone, supporting tool life and chip evacuation in demanding applications.
This end mill is suited for metalworking operations in job shops, aerospace, and general manufacturing environments where square-shoulder profiles and tight tolerances are required. The Weldon flat shank measures 1.25 inches in diameter and provides positive drive in standard end mill holders. With a 4-inch overall length and four insert pockets, it is configured for moderate to high material removal rates on steel, cast iron, and similar workpiece materials. Machinists and CNC operators installing this tool should verify holder bore diameter and insert grade selection prior to running the program.
Compatible with R390-11 series indexable inserts (insert compatibility designation R390-11..). Designed for use in machining centers and CNC milling equipment with through-spindle or through-tool coolant capability. Verify insert grade and geometry selection based on workpiece material before use.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool changer is disabled before mounting or removing the tool body. Confirm holder bore diameter matches the 1.25-inch Weldon flat shank and that clamping screws engage the flat properly to prevent axial pullout. Inspect insert seats and clamping screws for contamination or wear before seating new inserts; use the manufacturer-recommended torque driver for insert screw tightening.
