The SANDVIK COROMANT 5724984 is a CNMG-style indexable turning insert engineered for precision metal removal on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the ISO designation CNMG 12 04 12-MM 2015 and is manufactured from solid carbide with a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN. This coating sequence delivers wear resistance, thermal stability, and oxidation protection across a wide range of cutting conditions. The insert features an 80-degree diamond shape, a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, a 3/64 inch corner radius, and a 0.1875 inch insert thickness. The MM chip breaker geometry is designed for reliable chip control during medium turning operations. Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians.
The 5724984 is suited for medium turning applications where consistent chip control and surface finish are required. Its primary workpiece material designation is stainless steel (ISO material code M), making it appropriate for turning austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, and duplex stainless grades. The neutral hand orientation allows use on standard right-hand and left-hand toolholders. The T-Max P series designation indicates compatibility with SANDVIK COROMANT T-Max P toolholder bodies. With four cutting edges per insert, the 5724984 provides multiple index positions before replacement.
Designed for use with SANDVIK COROMANT T-Max P series toolholder bodies that accept CNMG 433 inserts with clamp and pin holding. ISO designation CNMG 12 04 12-MM 2015 can also be used to cross-reference compatible toolholders from other manufacturers that meet the same CNMG pocket geometry standard.
Indexable turning inserts are installed and indexed by machinists using manufacturer-specified torx or hex keys at the toolholder clamping screw. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing or indexing inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before seating the insert. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque specifications for the specific T-Max P body in use.
