The SANDVIK COROMANT 5724040 is a CNMG-style indexable turning insert designed for metal-cutting lathe operations in industrial and production machining environments. Manufactured from solid carbide and finished with a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, this insert is engineered for cutting performance in cast iron and similar hard, abrasive workpiece materials. The insert carries manufacturer grade 3210 and belongs to the T-Max P series. It features a neutral hand orientation, an 80-degree diamond shape (insert shape code C), and a WM chip breaker geometry. With four cutting edges available per insert, this tooling offers extended service life across high-volume turning applications.
This insert is suited for external and internal turning operations on cast iron components in production and job-shop environments. The WM chip breaker geometry is intended for medium-range cutting conditions where controlled chip formation is a priority. The insert seats in compatible CNMG toolholders that accept a clamp and pin holding method. Licensed machinists and CNC machine operators working in automotive, heavy equipment, and general industrial machining will find this insert appropriate for roughing to semi-finishing passes on cast iron. Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for CNMG toolholder systems accepting the CNMG 12 04 08 insert size within the T-Max P series. Compatible with clamp and pin style toolholders dimensioned for a 1/2-inch inscribed circle insert.
Indexable turning inserts are installed and replaced by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench per the toolholder manufacturer specifications when securing the clamping screw — do not over-tighten or use impact tools on insert screws. Inspect the toolholder seat and clamp for wear or debris before seating a new insert to ensure proper contact and dimensional accuracy.
