The RUUD RD18AY60AJVCA is a 5-ton, 18 SEER2 inverter-driven variable-speed heat pump from the Endeavor Line Ultra Series. It uses R-454B refrigerant and features a twin rotary compressor that modulates between 45% and 100% of capacity to match load conditions continuously. The side-discharge cabinet measures 58 inches tall, 40.4 inches long, and 19.8 inches wide, making it well suited for installations where space is limited. This unit is designed for licensed HVAC technicians installing residential and light-commercial cooling and heating systems where efficiency, footprint, and sound performance are primary concerns.
The RD18AY60AJVCA is engineered for universal installation compatibility. It works with Ruud EcoNet communicating systems as well as non-communicating configurations, and it can serve as a replacement unit with minimal system alterations. The side-discharge airflow pattern supports installations in tight side yards, alcoves, or enclosed equipment pads where a standard top-discharge unit cannot be accommodated. The 7mm condenser coil reduces refrigerant charge requirements by up to 15% compared to conventional coil designs, which lowers total R-454B fill volume and associated greenhouse gas potential. The steel cabinet uses a powder-coat paint system and rust-resistant fasteners for long-term exterior durability.
Compatible with Ruud EcoNet enabled communicating systems and non-communicating R-454B HVAC configurations. Functions as a universal replacement heat pump with minimal alterations to existing system wiring and controls.
Installation must be performed by a licensed HVAC technician familiar with R-454B mildly flammable (A2L) refrigerant handling requirements, as special recovery equipment and leak-detection practices apply. Disconnect and lock out all electrical power to the system before servicing any components. Follow local mechanical and electrical codes, including applicable sections of the NEC, when routing low-voltage control wiring and sizing disconnect means. Verify proper line set sizing using the 3/8-inch liquid connection and 7/8-inch suction fitting before brazing; do not exceed manufacturer-specified line set lengths without engineering review.
