The RUST-OLEUM 9808405 is a two-component, direct-to-metal (DTM) urethane mastic coating designed for heavy-duty corrosion protection in moderate to severe industrial environments. Sold as a 1-gallon base unit, it must be paired with a separately ordered activator before application. The high-solids, high-build formula is self-priming, sag resistant, and engineered to deliver durable gloss finish and color retention on metal substrates. It carries a two-year rust-proof guarantee and meets USDA requirements for incidental food contact, making it an appropriate choice for regulated facilities.
This coating is used on tanks, towers, structural steel, and metal equipment exposed to harsh industrial conditions. Its DTM formulation reduces surface prep steps by eliminating a dedicated primer coat in many applications, though best results are achieved when applied over the HS9300 System Epoxy Primer in red or gray. It is suited for plant maintenance crews, industrial painters, and coating contractors working on both new construction and maintenance repaint projects. The product is also accepted for use in federally registered Canadian food processing facilities.
Designed for direct application to metal substrates including tanks, towers, and industrial equipment in moderate to severe service environments. For optimal adhesion and corrosion protection, apply over RUST-OLEUM HS9300 System Epoxy Primer. Requires a separately ordered activator to complete the two-component system.
Application should be performed by experienced industrial painters or coating contractors familiar with two-component urethane systems. Mix base and activator thoroughly per manufacturer instructions and observe pot life limits once components are combined. Ensure the substrate is clean, dry, and free of mill scale, loose rust, and contaminants before coating. Follow local VOC regulations and use appropriate respiratory protection when applying in enclosed or partially enclosed spaces.
