The RUST-OLEUM 977402 is a high-performance direct-to-metal (DTM) alkyd enamel paint formulated for industrial and commercial metal surfaces. Part of the 7400 System line, it delivers a high-gloss, rust-preventative finish in a single coat. The 450 VOC formula applies directly to metal without a separate primer coat, though pairing with a 7400 System primer improves long-term performance. This 1-gallon unit covers moderate to slightly severe industrial environments and is suited for maintenance painting on structural steel, equipment, and fabricated metal components. Licensed painters and industrial maintenance crews are the typical installers.
The 977402 is designed for moderate to slightly severe industrial environments where corrosion protection and chemical resistance are required. It meets USDA requirements for incidental food contact and is accepted for use in federally registered Canadian food processing facilities, making it a viable option for food-service equipment finishing and food-plant maintenance work. The gloss brown finish dries tack-free in 2 to 4 hours, supporting efficient production schedules. It resists chipping, fading, and weathering, making it appropriate for both interior and exterior metal applications in industrial settings.
Formulated for use within the RUST-OLEUM 7400 System. Recommended companion products include 7400 System Heavy Duty Rust Inhibitive Primers, 7400 System Fast Recoat Primer, and 7400 System Red Damp Proof Primer for maximum corrosion protection.
Surface preparation is critical before applying any DTM coating — remove loose rust, mill scale, oil, and contaminants per standard SSPC surface prep guidelines. Power down and de-energize any equipment before painting. Follow local and facility VOC regulations, as this product is rated at 450 VOC. Industrial painters should reference the product data sheet for recoat windows and application temperature ranges before beginning work.
