The RUST-OLEUM 964402 is a high-performance direct-to-metal (DTM) alkyd enamel coating formulated for industrial and commercial applications where corrosion resistance is the primary requirement. Part of the 7400 System line, this 1-gallon unit delivers a high-gloss Safety Red finish with high-solids coverage in a single coat. The formula carries a VOC content of 450 grams per liter and dries tack-free in 2 to 4 hours. It is designed for application by industrial painters, maintenance crews, and trade professionals working in moderate to slightly severe industrial environments.
This coating is suited for use on metal structures, equipment, and fabrications that require durable rust-preventative protection. The 450 VOC alkyd enamel resists chipping, fading, and weathering, making it appropriate for both interior and exterior metal surfaces in industrial facilities. It meets USDA requirements for incidental food contact and is accepted for use in federally registered Canadian food facilities, expanding its suitability to food processing and related environments. The Safety Red color and gloss finish also support visibility and safety marking applications on equipment and structural elements.
Designed for use within the 7400 System product line. For maximum performance, apply over a 7400 System Heavy Duty Rust Inhibitive Primer, 7400 System Fast Recoat Primer, or 7400 System Red Damp Proof Primer. Compatible with metal substrates prepared to standard industrial surface preparation guidelines.
Surface preparation is critical before application — remove loose rust, mill scale, grease, and contaminants per the manufacturer and applicable industrial coating standards. Apply using brush, roller, or spray equipment rated for alkyd enamels. Ensure adequate ventilation during application and drying, particularly in enclosed spaces. Allow full cure before the coated surface is returned to service or exposed to chemical contact.
