The RUST-OLEUM 3575402 is a water-based rust reformer coating designed for direct application over rusted metal surfaces. It chemically bonds with rust and converts it into a stable, non-rusting surface without requiring sanding to bare metal. The finished surface dries to a hard, flat-black finish in 20-40 minutes to touch. One gallon covers up to 1,175 square feet, making it practical for both maintenance and production applications in mild industrial environments. Licensed coating applicators and maintenance professionals are the typical end users for this product.
This rust reformer is suited for mild industrial environments where ferrous metal surfaces have developed surface rust and require stabilization before topcoating or long-term exposure. It is applied directly to rusted surfaces, eliminating the labor step of grinding or sanding to bare metal. The water-based formula allows soap-and-water cleanup after application. It meets USDA requirements for incidental food contact and is accepted for use in federally registered Canadian food facilities, making it appropriate for food-processing and food-adjacent facilities. The formulation is VOC-compliant nationwide.
Designed for use on rusty ferrous metal surfaces in mild industrial environments. For topcoating, apply RUST-OLEUM High Performance or Industrial Choice solvent-based finishes over the cured reformer coat. Available separately in a 15 oz spray format in addition to this 1-gallon unit.
Surface preparation should include removal of loose rust scale, dirt, and grease before application — tight adherent rust does not need to be removed. Apply with brush, roller, or spray equipment appropriate for water-based coatings. Allow the reformer coat to cure fully before applying any solvent-based topcoat. Follow local regulations and SDS guidelines for ventilation and personal protective equipment during application.
