The RUST-OLEUM 316540 is a high-performance, water-based direct-to-metal (DTM) acrylic enamel coating formulated for indoor and outdoor use. It bonds directly to bare metal surfaces without a primer, delivering excellent one-coat coverage and strong corrosion resistance against mild to moderate environmental exposure. This 5-gallon pail in Silver Gray Gloss is suited for commercial and industrial maintenance applications where fast turnaround is critical. The coating reaches a dry-to-touch state in approximately 15 minutes, allowing work to continue with minimal downtime. Licensed painting contractors and maintenance crews apply this product to structural steel, equipment housings, and fabricated metal components.
This coating is designed for direct-to-metal applications on ferrous and non-ferrous substrates in both interior and exterior environments. It performs in settings exposed to mild to moderate conditions, including light industrial facilities, food processing plants, and maintenance shops. It meets USDA requirements for incidental food contact and is accepted for use in federally registered Canadian food facilities, making it a practical choice where sanitary compliance matters. Application by brush produces very little drag, and roller application results in an even, consistent lay-out.
Designed as a direct-to-metal topcoat for bare or previously painted ferrous and non-ferrous metal surfaces in residential, commercial, and light industrial settings. Apply when ambient temperature is between 50 and 100 degrees F and relative humidity is below 95 percent.
Surface preparation is critical — remove all loose rust, mill scale, grease, and contaminants before application. Painting contractors should follow local VOC regulations and applicable industry surface-prep standards. Do not apply below 50 degrees F or above 100 degrees F, and avoid application when relative humidity exceeds 95 percent. Allow adequate dry and cure time before exposing the coating to moisture or mechanical contact.
