The RUST-OLEUM 264186 is a water-based, direct-to-metal (DTM) acrylic enamel coating formulated for superior corrosion protection on metal surfaces. Part of the MetalMax Plus line, this single-component, high-gloss formula delivers strong resistance to corrosion and humidity while maintaining low VOCs and low HAPs, making it suitable for occupied or sensitive environments such as schools and facilities where solvent fumes are a concern. The coating dries and becomes re-coatable in 30 minutes, supporting efficient workflow on the job. It is approved for interior and exterior applications and meets USDA requirements for incidental food contact, broadening its range of acceptable use environments.
This coating is applied directly to metal without a separate primer step, though pairing it with a MetalMax primer is recommended for maximum performance. It adheres to a wide range of metal substrates including bare steel, galvanized steel, and aluminum. Typical applications include industrial maintenance painting, structural steel, equipment housings, fencing, doors, and other metal surfaces in commercial, institutional, and light industrial settings. Painting contractors and maintenance professionals handling metal finishing projects are the primary installers.
Designed for direct application to metal substrates including bare steel, galvanized steel, and aluminum; suitable for interior and exterior use. For best results, apply over RUST-OLEUM MetalMax primer.
Surface preparation is critical before application — remove loose rust, scale, grease, and contaminants per standard metal coating practices. Apply using brush, roller, or spray equipment appropriate for water-based coatings. Ensure adequate ventilation during application and drying. Follow all applicable local safety regulations and coating manufacturer guidelines for surface temperature and humidity conditions.
