The RUST-OLEUM 208039 is a water-based, direct-to-metal (DTM) acrylic enamel coating designed for professional application on ferrous and non-ferrous metal surfaces. Formulated under the MetalMax line, it delivers superior corrosion resistance and humidity resistance in a single-component system that dries in approximately 30 minutes. Low VOC and low HAP content make it suitable for schools, food-service facilities, and occupied spaces where solvent fumes are a concern. The semi-gloss black finish is washable and maintains color retention over time. Licensed trades including painters, maintenance mechanics, and industrial coating applicators are the primary installers.
This coating is used in both interior and exterior applications across residential, commercial, and light industrial settings. It applies directly to galvanized steel, aluminum, and standard steel without a separate primer coat, though pairing with MetalMax primer is recommended for maximum performance. Typical use cases include structural steel, equipment enclosures, railings, ductwork exteriors, and other metal surfaces that require durable, low-odor protective finishes. It meets USDA requirements for incidental food contact, making it appropriate for food-processing and food-service environments.
Designed for direct-to-metal application on galvanized steel and aluminum surfaces in interior and exterior environments. For best adhesion and corrosion protection, use over RUST-OLEUM MetalMax primer.
Surface preparation is critical before application — remove loose rust, grease, dirt, and mill scale, and ensure the substrate is dry. Follow all local VOC regulations and workplace safety requirements when applying coatings in enclosed spaces, even with low-VOC formulas. Use appropriate applicators such as brush, roller, or spray equipment as specified on the product label. Allow full cure before exposing the coated surface to moisture or heavy handling.
