It seats in a machined internal groove to axially retain shafts, bearings, or other components inside a housing bore. The ring measures 1.07 mm (0.042 inches) thick and fits a groove width of 1.17 mm (0.046 inches) with a groove depth of 0.84 mm. Manufactured to Military Specification, this ring carries a thrust load capacity of 2800 pounds at the groove safety factor and 6039 pounds at the ring safety factor. It is finished with cadmium plating and heat treated to a Rockwell 30N hardness of 66 to 71. Internal snap retaining rings of this type are installed using internal snap ring pliers; use of incorrect tools can damage the ring or groove and reduce retention capacity. Verify bore groove dimensions against the specified groove width tolerance of 0.000 to 0.003 inches and groove diameter tolerance of -0.0030 to 0.0030 inches before installation. Depressurize, de-energize, or lock out any assembly before installing or removing retaining rings to prevent accidental release. Do not reuse a ring that has been overstressed, visibly deformed, or removed from service.
