The Robertshaw 700-208 is a snap-throttle hydraulic combination gas valve designed for thermostatically controlled heating appliances. It belongs to the 700-200 Series, which includes both snap-action and snap-throttle modulating controls. These valves are operated by a remote temperature sensing bulb, making them well suited for applications where precise temperature regulation is needed from a distance. HVAC technicians and gas appliance service professionals rely on this type of control valve for water heaters, boilers, and other gas-fired equipment that require remote temperature sensing and modulating gas flow control.
The 700-208 is a dual capillary, remote dial model designed for cabinet mounting. It uses an 18 inches capillary running from the valve body to the sensing bulb, and a 48 inches capillary connecting the sensing bulb to the remote temperature adjustment knob. This configuration allows the temperature adjustment dial to be mounted separately on a cabinet panel, giving technicians and end users convenient access without direct contact with the valve itself.
As a snap-throttle control, the 700-208 is factory set to snap open at 50 percent of the appliance rated capacity. From that 50 percent minimum rate, the valve modulates upward to full input capacity based on the heat demand sensed by the remote bulb. As the target temperature is approached, the control progressively throttles the gas flow back down to the minimum rate. Once the temperature requirement is fully satisfied, the valve snaps off completely. This modulating behavior improves efficiency and provides more consistent temperature control compared to simple on-off gas valves.
The valve integrates several components into one assembly. It combines a manual gas cock, an automatic pilot safety valve, a pressure regulator where applicable by model, and the snap-throttle hydraulic operator. All models in the 700-200 Series include three-position main gas outlets, a pilot outlet, a pilot gas filter, a pilot adjustment key, and an automatic pilot valve. The automatic pilot valve operates independently from the gas cock and shuts off gas supply if the pilot flame goes out, providing an important safety function in gas appliance systems.
The Robertshaw 700-208 combination gas valve delivers reliable snap-throttle modulating temperature control through a remote sensing bulb and dual capillary system, making it a practical replacement for gas-fired appliances requiring precise remote temperature regulation and pilot safety shutoff.
