The RHEEM vpa-589-6srd is a refrigerant accumulator designed to protect compressors from liquid slugging in split-system and package air conditioning and heat pump equipment. The U-tube design maximizes refrigerant flow while minimizing pressure drop and oil entrapment. An inlet flow deflector guides refrigerant toward the accumulator wall for smooth flow and gradual expansion. A protective screen and orifice assembly blocks foreign particles and contaminants from reaching the metering components. The unit carries a 355 psig design pressure rating and is compatible with both R-22 and R-410A refrigerants. Solid copper connections and a powder paint coating that exceeds ASTM 500-hour salt spray testing round out the construction.
This accumulator is suited for residential and light commercial HVAC applications using TXV or fixed orifice metering systems. For TXV systems, accumulators should be sized to hold at least 50 percent of the total refrigerant charge. For fixed orifice systems, sizing should accommodate at least 70 percent of the charge. Proper sizing ensures consistent liquid refrigerant and oil return to the compressor, which is critical for long-term compressor reliability. An integral 430 degrees F fuse plug is included as a safety feature to release internal pressure if the accumulator is exposed to abnormally high temperatures.
Compatible with R-22 and R-410A refrigerant systems. Suitable for both TXV and fixed orifice metering systems. Designed as an OEM-style replacement accumulator for residential and light commercial split-system and package HVAC equipment.
Installation should be performed by an EPA Section 608 certified HVAC technician. Recover all refrigerant and de-energize the system before removing the existing accumulator. Ensure the replacement unit is properly sized for the system refrigerant charge before installation. Braze copper connections using nitrogen purge per standard industry practice to prevent oxidation scale inside the refrigerant circuit.
