The RCI VR166 is a vertical rod electric strike designed to work with vertical rod exit device hardware in commercial door applications. Electric strikes allow a door to be released remotely by interrupting or applying power to the strike, retracting the keeper and freeing the latchbolt or bolt projection from the vertical rod. The VR166 is sized and configured to accept the top rod throw of a vertical rod exit device, making it a specialized component not interchangeable with standard rim or mortise strikes. Installation and commissioning are typically performed by a licensed low-voltage or access control technician.
The VR166 is suited for commercial entryways, stairwell doors, and other openings equipped with vertical rod exit devices where remote release or access control integration is required. Typical applications include office buildings, schools, hospitals, and other facilities that must balance code-compliant egress hardware with controlled-access entry. The strike integrates into an access control system, allowing the door to be released from a remote credential reader, intercom, or controller output.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation electric strike for commercial doors equipped with vertical rod exit device hardware.
Installation should be performed by a licensed low-voltage or access control technician familiar with electric strike hardware and applicable local codes. Disconnect and de-energize the access control circuit before beginning work on the strike or wiring connections. Verify the door frame preparation and rod projection alignment before securing the strike body to avoid binding or misalignment. Consult the manufacturer data sheet for wiring configuration, fail-safe versus fail-secure jumper settings, and frame cutout dimensions before installation.
