The DORMAKABA USA INC. RCI VR165 is an electric strike designed to work with vertical rod locking hardware and roller latch mechanisms. Electric strikes replace a standard door frame strike plate and allow the latch or bolt to be released remotely via electrical signal, without requiring the latch mechanism itself to retract. The VR165 is built specifically for vertical rod door setups, which are common on double doors and high-traffic entry points in commercial and institutional buildings. Licensed locksmiths, access control technicians, and commercial door hardware installers are the primary trades that specify and install this unit.
The VR165 is suited for commercial access control applications where vertical rod exit devices are already in service. Vertical rod hardware spans the full height of a door leaf, engaging top and bottom latches simultaneously, and requires a strike with geometry and keeper depth matched to that latch style. This electric strike provides that compatibility, making it a direct-fit solution for facilities upgrading manual vertical rod doors to electrified access control without replacing the existing exit device hardware.
Designed as an OEM-style electric strike replacement for commercial doors equipped with vertical rod exit devices and roller latch mechanisms. Consult the product data sheet for specific hardware compatibility before installation.
Installation should be performed by a licensed locksmith or certified access control technician familiar with commercial door hardware and low-voltage wiring. Disconnect all power to the access control system and any electrified hardware before beginning work. Rough-in wiring for electric strikes must comply with applicable NEC requirements for low-voltage circuits. Verify frame prep dimensions and latch projection against manufacturer specifications before cutting or modifying the frame.
