The RACO 509 is a single-gang, gangable switch box designed for old-work electrical installations in residential wiring applications. Constructed from 0.0625-inch pre-galvanized steel, this box delivers durable corrosion resistance in standard wall cavity conditions. It provides 12.5 cubic inches of interior volume, meeting NEC fill requirements for typical device installations. The box measures 3 inches in height, 2 inches in width, and 2.5 inches in depth. Four 1/2-inch knockouts are positioned at the bottom and ends to accommodate conduit entry from multiple directions. Licensed electricians install this box during retrofit or repair work where old-work mounting is required.
The RACO 509 is suited for residential house wiring device installations where existing drywall or plaster walls are already in place. The gangable design allows two or more boxes to be joined side-by-side to accommodate multi-device configurations such as switch and receptacle combinations. Plaster ears are integrated to support flush mounting against finished wall surfaces in old-work scenarios. This box is a standard choice for retrofit switch and outlet locations throughout residential construction and light commercial tenant improvement work.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard new-installation switch box for single-gang residential wiring devices including switches and receptacles in old-work applications.
Installation of this switch box should be performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable local codes. De-energize the circuit at the breaker panel and verify zero voltage with a meter before beginning work. The box is secured using plaster ears against the finished wall surface; ensure the ears bear firmly on the wall face before tightening. Do not exceed the NEC-rated conductor fill capacity of 12.5 cubic inches when selecting wire gauge and quantity.
