The PROTO J965/8S2 is a 5/16-inch drift punch manufactured from steel with a black oxide finish. Drift punches are designed to align holes in mating metal components, driving pins, and clearing obstructions during assembly or disassembly work. This punch measures 10.1094 inches overall length, placing it in the 10-inch-and-longer category suited for reaching into tight assemblies. The black oxide coating reduces surface friction and provides mild corrosion resistance. It is a standard hand-tool item used by millwrights, pipefitters, ironworkers, electricians, and general maintenance trades on job sites and in shops.
This drift punch is appropriate for aligning bolt holes in structural steel, pipe flanges, electrical enclosures, and mechanical assemblies where a tapered pin tool is required. The 5/16-inch tip size fits common alignment applications in both light industrial and heavy construction environments. It is used as a single-hand strike tool with a ball-peen or engineer hammer during panel, bracket, and flange installation work.
Designed as a standard drift punch for general hole-alignment and pin-driving tasks across structural, mechanical, and trade assembly applications.
Drift punches are installed and removed by hand and driven with a ball-peen or engineer hammer. Always wear appropriate eye protection when striking any punch tool. Inspect the punch for cracks, mushrooming, or deformation before each use and remove it from service if damage is found. Do not use a punch as a pry bar or chisel, as this can cause the tool to fail unexpectedly.
