The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 6000428 is a reduced shank cobalt drill bit designed for drilling into ferrous metals and a wide range of secondary materials including aluminum, copper, nickel, titanium, and magnesium. The bit measures 45/64 inches (0.7031 inches decimal) in diameter with a 1/2-inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to seat in standard 1/2-inch chucks even though the cutting diameter is larger. Overall length is 6 inches with a 3-inch flute length. The 118-degree split point promotes accurate starts and reduces the need for center punching on most metals. Designed for right-hand cutting with a regular spiral flute, this bit suits production and maintenance drilling in machine shop, fabrication, and field service environments.
This bit fits applications where a full-shank bit of the same diameter would not seat in a standard 1/2-inch chuck. The reduced shank design makes it practical for drill presses, magnetic drills, and hand-held heavy-duty drills equipped with 1/2-inch chucks. Typical use cases include structural steel drilling, HVAC bracket fabrication, pipe hanger installation, electrical panel knockout work, and general metal fabrication. The cobalt construction handles elevated cutting temperatures better than standard high-speed steel, making it well suited for harder ferrous alloys and interrupted cuts. No coolant-through capability is present, so external cutting fluid is recommended for prolonged use in hard materials.
Designed as an OEM-style reduced shank drill bit compatible with any drill press, magnetic base drill, or hand-held drill motor with a standard 1/2-inch chuck capacity. Rated for use in ferrous metal as the primary workpiece material, with secondary compatibility in aluminum, cermet, copper, magnesium, nickel, synthetic materials, and titanium per Series R56CO specifications.
This bit is installed and operated by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, pipefitters, HVAC fabricators, and electricians performing metal drilling tasks. Ensure the drill chuck is fully tightened on the straight-cylindrical shank before operation. Power down and lock out the drill press or demagnetize the mag drill base before changing bits. External cutting fluid or cutting oil is strongly recommended when drilling hard ferrous alloys or performing deep cuts to manage heat buildup, since this bit has no internal coolant provision.
