The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 6000178 is a high speed steel extra length drill bit designed for deep-hole drilling in metal fabrication, maintenance, and mechanical service applications. With a 1/8 inch diameter, a 12 inch overall length, and a 9 inch flute length, this bit reaches into recessed locations that standard-length drill bits cannot access. The 118-degree standard point angle and web-thinned tip reduce entry force and improve centering on flat or curved surfaces. The bright uncoated finish makes wear easy to monitor. Right-hand spiral flutes clear chips efficiently during continuous cuts. Licensed machinists, pipefitters, HVAC technicians, and general mechanical trades rely on extra length bits like this when drilling through deep stock, structural members, or stacked materials.
This bit is suited for general purpose drilling in both production and field environments. Primary workpiece materials include aluminum, magnesium, copper, nickel, synthetic materials, and titanium. It also handles secondary materials such as stainless steel, hardened steel, high strength bronze, nickel alloy, malleable iron, reinforced plastics, and magnesium alloys. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard three-jaw drill chucks without adapters. The Series 1290 designation indicates a standard extra length geometry manufactured to ANSI specification. This bit is well suited for HVAC equipment frames, electrical enclosure drilling, plumbing rough-in through deep framing members, and similar trade applications where reach is the limiting factor.
Designed as a general purpose extra length drill bit compatible with any standard drill chuck accepting a 1/8 inch straight cylindrical shank, including corded and cordless drills, drill presses, and magnetic base drills used across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical service trades.
Ensure the workpiece is firmly secured before drilling to prevent bit deflection at this extended length. Use the lowest practical RPM for steel and harder alloys to manage heat buildup, and apply cutting fluid when drilling ferrous materials for extended bit life. Inspect the cutting edges before each use — high speed steel bits will show visible dulling or bluing if overheated. Follow applicable OSHA and shop safety requirements for rotating tool use, including proper chuck key removal before powering on.
