The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 6000166 is a single-ended, high speed steel spotting drill designed to accurately locate and start holes before a standard twist drill follows through. The 120-degree point angle creates a shallow, well-defined cone seat that guides subsequent drill bits and reduces walking on flat or curved workpiece surfaces. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating increases surface hardness and reduces friction, extending tool life in production environments. The 1/4-inch cutting diameter and straight cylindrical shank make this drill compatible with standard chucks on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and manual mills. It is installed and used by machinists, tool-and-die tradespeople, and precision sheet metal fabricators.
This spotting drill is suited for general-purpose hole-starting operations in ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, and composites encountered in light manufacturing, maintenance, and repair machining. The spiral flute geometry with two flutes evacuates chips cleanly during short-entry cuts. With a 4-inch overall length and a 3/4-inch flute length, the tool is sized for bench drill presses and vertical machining center setups where compact tooling is required. The Series SPRG-120 designation identifies it within the PRECISION TWIST DRILL spotting drill family at this point angle and diameter.
Designed as a general-purpose spotting drill for use in standard drill chucks and collet holders accepting a 1/4-inch straight cylindrical shank, on drill presses, vertical mills, and CNC machining centers.
Install and remove cutting tools only with the spindle at a complete stop and the machine locked out or in a safe hold state per shop safety protocols. Secure the shank fully within the chuck or collet to the manufacturer-recommended engagement depth to prevent tool pullout under thrust load. Set spindle speed and feed rate according to the workpiece material and tool diameter using a standard machinist speed-and-feed reference. Do not use this spotting drill as a substitute for a center drill in applications requiring a 60-degree pilot seat.
