The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5999970 is a reduced shank twist drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metal fabrication, maintenance, and industrial applications. It features a 27/32 inch (0.8438 inch decimal) cutting diameter with a 1/2 inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to fit standard 1/2 inch drill chucks without requiring a larger chuck capacity. Constructed from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this bit delivers consistent performance across ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The 118-degree standard point angle is the industry-standard geometry for general metalworking and multi-material use.
This drill bit is suited for production and maintenance drilling in ferrous metals, aluminum, copper, magnesium, nickel, titanium, and synthetic materials. The reduced shank design makes it practical when a large-diameter hole is needed but only a 1/2 inch chuck is available. It is used by machinists, millwrights, pipefitters, and maintenance technicians working on structural, mechanical, and process equipment. The Series R56 designation identifies it within the PRECISION TWIST DRILL standard jobber and reduced shank product line.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use drill bit compatible with any 1/2 inch keyed or keyless drill chuck. Suitable for use in ferrous metals, aluminum, copper, magnesium, nickel, titanium, cermet, and synthetic materials per Series R56 application ratings. Conforms to ANSI standards.
Install and remove this bit with the drill press or handheld drill fully powered off and unplugged. Secure the reduced shank firmly in the chuck jaws and verify full engagement before drilling. Follow shop safety practices including eye protection and appropriate workholding. For deep holes approaching the maximum 3 inch flute depth, use a peck-drilling technique and clear chips frequently to prevent bit binding or breakage.
