The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5999842 is a reduced shank twist drill bit engineered for boring large-diameter holes through ferrous metals, aluminum, copper, and a range of other workpiece materials. The bit features a 1-1/2-inch cutting diameter paired with a 1/2-inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to seat in standard 1/2-inch chucks without requiring an oversized chuck or arbor. Ground from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this bit carries a 118-degree standard point angle suited to general-purpose drilling. Machinists, pipefitters, ironworkers, and maintenance mechanics are the primary installers for a bit of this diameter range.
The 5999842 fits production-floor drill presses, magnetic base drills, and heavy-duty handheld drills equipped with a 1/2-inch chuck. At 6 inches overall length with a 3-inch flute length, it handles through-holes and stepped holes in structural steel, pipe flanges, electrical enclosures, aluminum plate, copper bus, and similar fabrication or maintenance applications. The R56 series designation places this bit within PRECISION TWIST DRILL's general-purpose reduced-shank line, built to ANSI standards. Right-hand spiral flutes evacuate chips efficiently during standard clockwise drilling operations.
Designed as an OEM-style general-purpose reduced shank drill bit for use in any 1/2-inch capacity chuck. Rated for primary use on ferrous metals and secondary use on aluminum, cermet, copper, magnesium, nickel, synthetic, and titanium workpiece materials per manufacturer specifications.
Secure the 1/2-inch shank firmly in a properly rated drill chuck before operation; verify the chuck key is fully removed before powering the machine. De-energize and lock out any magnetic drill base or drill press before changing bits. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid when drilling ferrous metals at this diameter to extend bit life and manage heat. Wear eye and hand protection in accordance with applicable ANSI and shop safety standards when operating large-diameter drill bits.
