The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5999768 is a taper length, straight-shank drill bit designed for demanding metal fabrication and machining work. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this bit features a 118-degree standard point angle and a web-thinned, tapered web configuration that reduces thrust and improves chip evacuation. At 31/32 inch (0.9688 inch) in diameter, it offers a 6-3/8 inch flute length and an overall length of 11 inches, giving it the reach needed for deeper holes that standard-length bits cannot access. Right-hand spiral fluting in a regular spiral pattern provides efficient cutting action across a broad range of materials. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance mechanics are the primary users.
This Series R51 bit is suited for general-purpose drilling in production and job-shop environments where taper length reach is required. It is rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, malleable iron, aluminum, aluminum alloy, brass, bronze, high-strength bronze, copper, nickel, nickel alloy, magnesium, magnesium alloy, graphite, cermet, hardened steel, reinforced plastic, and steel. The 6xD flute-length-to-diameter ratio supports chip clearance in moderate-depth drilling operations without the need for coolant-through capability.
Designed as a general-purpose taper length drill bit compatible with any drill press, radial arm drill, or CNC machining center chuck sized for a 31/32 inch straight shank. Suitable for the full range of materials listed in the material application data, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals and select plastics.
Secure the straight shank firmly in a properly sized drill chuck and verify runout before drilling. Always clamp the workpiece securely to prevent rotation and reduce the risk of injury. Follow applicable shop safety standards and machine manufacturer guidelines for spindle speed selection based on material type and bit diameter. Inspect the cutting edges and web area before each use and remove the bit from service if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
