The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5999496 is a taper length drill bit designed for precision drilling in a wide range of metalworking and general fabrication applications. Manufactured from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright/uncoated finish, it measures 0.0240 inches in diameter — equivalent to wire gauge size 73 — and features a standard 118-degree point angle. The overall length is 1.5 inches, with a spiral flute length of 5/16 inches at a 6xD ratio. The straight shank and right-hand cut make it compatible with standard drill chucks. A web-thinned, tapered web configuration reduces thrust and improves centering on entry. Licensed machinists, tool and die technicians, and precision fabricators are the primary users of this size range.
This bit is suited for general-purpose drilling in both production shop and maintenance environments. The 0.0240-inch diameter targets close-tolerance applications such as pilot holes, small-bore work, and precision through-holes in thin-gauge materials. The Series R52 designation places it in PRECISION TWIST DRILL's standard taper length line, intended for jobs where added reach beyond a jobber-length bit is needed without stepping up to a full extra-long bit. It performs across a broad spectrum of workpiece materials including aluminum alloys, brass, bronze, copper, carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, cast iron, malleable iron, nickel alloys, magnesium alloys, reinforced plastics, graphite, cermet, and hardened steel.
Designed for general-purpose use across alloy steel, aluminum, aluminum alloy, brass, bronze, carbon steel, cast iron, cermet, copper, graphite, hardened steel, high strength bronze, magnesium, magnesium alloy, malleable iron, nickel, nickel alloy, reinforced plastic materials, and stainless steel workpieces. Fits any standard drill chuck that accepts a 0.0240-inch straight shank.
This drill bit is installed and operated by machinists, tool and die technicians, and precision fabricators using standard drill presses, CNC machining centers, or hand-held power drills with compatible chucks. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent deflection at this small diameter. At wire gauge sizes in the sub-1/16-inch range, feed rate and spindle speed control are critical — excessive feed pressure is the primary cause of bit breakage. Follow the machine tool manufacturer and material supplier recommendations for speed and feed parameters.
