The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5999281 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for precision drilling in demanding trade and manufacturing applications. Built from high speed steel with a bright/uncoated finish, it features a 0.055 inch diameter, a 118-degree standard point angle, and a right-hand spiral flute configuration. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without adapters. At 1.625 inches overall length with a 0.625 inch flute length, this stub-length bit delivers added rigidity and reduced deflection compared to jobber-length alternatives. Web thinning improves penetration and reduces thrust force at the cutting tip.
This bit is suited for screw machine operations, CNC drilling, and close-tolerance work on the benchtop or at the machine. Its compact screw machine length makes it appropriate for confined-space drilling where a jobber-length bit would chatter or flex. The Series R41 designation places it in a general-purpose high-performance tier, with the manufacturer noting titanium as a primary workpiece material. It is sold individually per package, with a minimum order quantity of 12 units. Machinists, toolroom technicians, and precision fabrication shops are the primary installers and users.
Designed as a screw machine length replacement or production-run drill bit compatible with standard straight-shank drill chucks used in benchtop drill presses, CNC machining centers, and screw machines requiring a wire gauge 54 diameter bit.
Install in a properly sized straight-shank drill chuck and verify chuck runout before drilling to protect the small-diameter bit from breakage. At 0.055 inch diameter, feed rates and spindle speeds must be carefully controlled — excessive feed pressure is the primary cause of bit breakage at this size. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling and use cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material when drilling titanium or hardened stock. Inspect the cutting tip for wear or chipping between uses, as small-diameter high speed steel bits have limited regrind margins.
