Product Description

The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5999171 is a jobber-length drill bit sized at No. 40 (0.0980 inches decimal) for general-purpose drilling in metal and hard materials. The bit is manufactured from high speed steel with a steam oxide coating that provides lubricity and light corrosion resistance during storage and use. A 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and requires less feed pressure than a standard 118-degree grind. The spiral flute geometry follows a regular helix with a web-thinned, tapered web configuration. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a 1.375-inch flute length and a straight-cylindrical shank. Right-hand cut. Designed for professional use in drill presses, CNC machines, and hand-held power tools.

This bit is suited for drilling steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium — covering ISO material codes P, M, K, N, and S. The 14xD flute-to-diameter ratio and heavy-duty grade make it appropriate for production drilling and maintenance applications alike. It fits standard jobber-length chuck applications and is a common choice for HVAC, mechanical, and fabrication trades when precise small-diameter hole placement is required. Sold individually; minimum order quantity is 12 units per order.

Key Features

  • No. 40 wire gauge size — 0.0980 inches decimal diameter
  • 135-degree split point reduces drill walk and cutting force on entry
  • Steam oxide coating provides lubricity and light rust resistance
  • High speed steel construction rated for steel, stainless, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and superalloys
  • Web-thinned tapered web for improved chip clearance
  • Conforms to ANSI standards and NAS 907 specification

Compatibility

Designed as a general-purpose OEM-style jobber-length drill bit for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks across drill presses, CNC drilling centers, and hand-held power tools. Part of the PRECISION TWIST DRILL R10B-R15B-R18B series.

Installation Notes

Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists, tool-and-die technicians, or trade professionals familiar with small-diameter drilling operations. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling and confirm the chuck is properly tightened on the straight-cylindrical shank before starting the spindle. Avoid side-loading the bit, as small-diameter high speed steel bits are susceptible to breakage under lateral force. Follow applicable shop safety practices and machine guarding requirements when operating drilling equipment.
