The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5998982 is a taper length drill bit engineered for precision drilling in a range of non-ferrous and light metals. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this bit features a 118-degree standard point angle and a web-thinned, tapered web configuration that reduces thrust and improves chip evacuation. The right-hand spiral flute design promotes clean, consistent cutting with a 6xD flute-to-diameter ratio. At 1/4 inch (0.2500 inches) in diameter with a matching cylindrical shank, it fits standard drill chucks without adapters. This bit is manufactured to ANSI standards and is suited for general-purpose drilling work performed by machinists, maintenance technicians, and metalworking trades.
This drill bit is designed for use in aluminum, aluminum alloy, copper, magnesium, and magnesium alloy applications. The Series R51FS taper length format provides added reach compared to jobber-length bits, making it well suited for deeper hole applications in sheet metal fabrication, HVAC equipment assembly, and mechanical maintenance tasks where standard-length bits cannot reach. The fast spiral flute type promotes efficient chip clearance when drilling softer, gummy non-ferrous materials that tend to pack around the cutting edges.
Rated for drilling aluminum, aluminum alloy, copper, magnesium, and magnesium alloy. Compatible with any standard drill chuck accepting a 0.2500 inch cylindrical shank. Also identified by drill bit size designations 1/4 inch and Letter E.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or technicians familiar with drill press or hand-drill operation. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent walking or grab, particularly in soft non-ferrous materials. Power down the machine and confirm the chuck is fully tightened before operation. Do not exceed the recommended speed range for the material being drilled, as high speed steel bits can lose temper if overheated without adequate cooling or feed control.
